On the relationship between the eye and the heart
On the relationship between the eye and the heart and the state of
tranquility (mutmain); The heart becomes tranquil when the eye sees.
In this sense, the eye – the act of seeing – has the strongest
influence on the heart. Some of Allah Teâlâ’s, “Messengers” and “Prophets”
asked Allah Teala(ﷻ)to make them see so that their heart
becomes tranquil. Witnessing/seeing is essential in matters of Fiqh (Islamic
jurisprudence). The saying “out of sight, out of mind” refers to the fact
that people who often get together have a stronger heart
connection with one another.
The relationship between the sense of sight and the heart
is faster and stronger when compared with the other senses.
In the same vein, the eyes can reflect what is happening in the heart more efficiently than the other organs. The state of the heart is reflected in the eyes.
That is why nazar (glance/the evil eye) has a forceful
effect.
Those who can see can feel whether someone is sincere
or not by looking at them in the eye.
Ehlullâh (the folk of Allah) describe the human being
(insan-ı kâmil/ the spiritually mature person) as the eye of the
realm.
The act of seeing might sometimes refer to seeing with
the eyes of the head (outer seeing/basar) while at other times it
might refer to seeing with the eye of the heart (inner seeing /the
eye of the heart/discernment). Amongst these, the most substantial
and unfaulty (way of) seeing is seeing with the eye of the heart
which we call discernment.
Allah ( ﷻ ) knows best.
